Back up your texts with SMS Backup & Restore
5 min · on your Android phone- 1Install SMS Backup & Restore (free, by SyncTech) from Google PlayIt is a separate app that copies your texts into one file on the phone. MessageBinder then reads that file.
- 2Open it → Set up a backup → turn on MessagesTurn on Phone calls too if you want the call log. Keep MMS and media on so photos come along.
- 3Choose where to save (Your phone is simplest), then Back up nowThe file lands in the SMSBackupRestore folder of your phone’s storage (open it with Files, or My Files on a Samsung), or in Google Drive › SMSBackupRestore. It is named like sms-20260928120000.xml.
- 4Come back to this page on the phone, tap Choose file and pick the fileIn the file picker, open the SMSBackupRestore folder (or Drive › SMSBackupRestore). Add calls-….xml too if you backed up calls.
- 5Prefer a computer? Get the file thereIn step 3, save the backup to Google Drive. Then, on the computer, open drive.google.com › SMSBackupRestore, download the sms-….xml file and add it here.
SMS Backup & Restore is made by SyncTech, not by MessageBinder. This page doesn’t read your phone’s messages directly: it only reads the backup file you choose.
Questions
Is it private?
Yes. Your messages are read and turned into PDFs inside your browser; they are never uploaded. Once the page has loaded, you can turn off Wi‑Fi and it still works. The page only fetches its own files (the page, its code and fonts) and, if you bought a license, asks our payment company whether your key is valid: when you enter it and each time you open the page again.
Which file do I add?
The one named like sms-20260928120000.xml (the numbers are the date and time of the backup). If you backed up calls, add calls-….xml too. Several backups from different days? Add them all: a message found in more than one is counted once.
Can I do it all on the phone?
Yes. Open this page in Chrome on the phone, tap Choose file and pick the backup. The export downloads as a .zip to Downloads; large exports with many photos come in a few parts on a phone, and the page tells you how many first.
Are MMS photos and group texts included?
Yes, if MMS were included in the backup (keep MMS and media on in SMS Backup & Restore). Photos appear inside the PDF and are also saved as original files. A group text becomes one conversation, with each person’s name or number above their messages.
Why do some conversations show a number instead of a name?
The names come from the backup file, which holds the names your phone had for each number. For numbers without one, export your contacts as a .vcf file (in the Contacts app: Fix & manage › Export to file) and add it together with the backup.
Are calls included?
If you backed up calls, add calls-….xml with the messages: the call log comes as a spreadsheet (calls.csv), not in the PDFs.
Does it include deleted messages?
No. Only messages that were on the phone when the backup was made are in the file.
The page says my file is incomplete
The copy of the file was cut off, for example a download from Drive that didn’t finish. Download or copy it again, or make a new backup, and add the new file.
What about messages that failed to send?
They are kept and clearly marked in the PDF and the spreadsheet (“Not sent”, or “Sent, not delivered” when the delivery report says it never arrived), so nobody mistakes them for messages the other person received.
Which time zone are the times in?
The backup stores the exact moment of each message, so the page shows the times in a time zone you choose (your device’s zone by default) and prints that zone in every PDF and in the spreadsheet.
Will a court accept it?
Many people use these PDFs as a dated record: every message shows the sender, date and time, and the header says whose phone it is and which time zone the times are in. Keep the original backup file as your master copy. Whether a court accepts it is up to the court; your lawyer can advise you.
How do I open the download on my computer?
The export is a .zip file in your Downloads folder. Windows: right-click it and choose Extract All. Mac: double-click it. A folder appears: your PDFs are in “Conversations”, the spreadsheets are next to it, and README.txt explains the rest.
How do I open the download on my phone?
The export is a .zip file. iPhone: Files › Downloads › tap the .zip, a folder appears, open “Conversations” and tap a PDF. Android: Files (or My Files) › Downloads › tap the .zip › Extract, then open “Conversations”. If it came in several parts, do this for each part.
What does it cost?
Preview and sample are free. The full export is $14.99 once, no subscription; one purchase works on 5 devices and covers Android and iPhone texts, Google Voice and WhatsApp. Try the free sample first: if the full export doesn’t work for your files, email us within 30 days for a full refund.
