Back up your iPhone on a computer

15 min · Mac or Windows PC
  1. 1
Plug the iPhone into your computer with its cable
On a Mac, open Finder: the iPhone appears under Locations in the sidebar. On Windows, get Apple’s free Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store (iTunes also works if it is already installed) and click the iPhone there. On the phone, unlock it, tap Trust and enter the passcode.
  2. 2
Choose to back up to this Mac or this computer
In Finder and Apple Devices, under Backups: “Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac” (or “…to this computer”). In iTunes, under Backups: “This Computer”. A backup in iCloud can’t be read here; it has to be on your computer.
  3. 3
Untick Encrypt local backup, then Back Up Now
On a first backup the box is normally already unticked. Unticking it asks for your backup password. Forgot it? On the iPhone: Settings › General › Transfer or Reset › Reset › Reset All Settings (keeps your data and apps; Wi‑Fi passwords and wallpaper are reset), then back up again. Keep the cable connected until the backup finishes.
  4. 4
Find the backup on the computer
On a Mac, press Shift + Command + G in Finder and paste ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup. On Windows, press Windows + R and paste %USERPROFILE%\Apple\MobileSync\Backup (with the older iTunes downloaded from apple.com it is %APPDATA%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup). There is one folder with a long name of letters and numbers for each device you have backed up.
  5. 5
Drag that long-named folder onto this page, or use Choose backup folder
Add the one for your phone (the page shows each device’s name if you add several). Chrome and Edge ask “Upload N files to this site?”: that is the browser’s wording for letting this page read them. Nothing leaves your computer.

Why a computer? An iPhone doesn’t let websites or other apps read its messages. A backup made over the cable on your own computer is a complete copy, photos included, and this page reads that copy, not the phone.

Questions

Is it private?

Yes. Your messages are read and turned into PDFs inside your browser; they are never uploaded. Once the page has loaded, you can turn off Wi‑Fi and it still works. The page only fetches its own files (the page, its code and fonts) and, if you bought a license, asks our payment company whether your key is valid: when you enter it and each time you open the page again. From the backup folder, only the message, contact, call-log and photo files are read.

Can I print iPhone texts without a computer?

Not with MessageBinder. A complete copy of your messages, with dates and photos, comes from a backup, and an iPhone makes that kind of backup on a Mac or Windows PC. For a few messages, screenshots work; for whole conversations, use a computer once.

Does it work on Windows?

Yes. Install Apple’s free Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store (or use iTunes), back up the iPhone to the computer, then open this page in Chrome or Edge and add the backup folder. Chrome and Edge ask “Upload N files to this site?”: that is how the browser asks to let this page read them. Nothing leaves your computer.

What ends up in the PDF?

Each conversation you tick: iMessage, SMS and MMS, group chats with each person’s name, photos in place, and reactions (“Loved”, “Liked”) as short lines. The header says whose phone it is and which time zone the times are in. Names come from the contacts in the same backup. Calls go into a spreadsheet, not the PDFs.

My backup is encrypted. What now?

The page tells you when it is, because it can’t read an encrypted backup. Turn encryption off in Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes (untick “Encrypt local backup” and type the backup password once), back up again and add the new folder. If nobody remembers the password, Settings › General › Transfer or Reset › Reset › Reset All Settings on the iPhone clears it without erasing your data or apps.

Can I print just one conversation?

Yes. Untick the others, or search the list by name or number; the free sample and the full export both follow your selection.

Why does the PDF show a note where a photo should be?

Most iPhone photos are HEIC files. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can’t draw them, so in those browsers the PDF shows a note where the photo goes, and the photo itself is saved in the Attachments folder (Photos on Windows and Preview on a Mac open it). To get HEIC photos inside the PDF, make the export in Safari on a Mac.

How much space does the backup need?

About as much as the phone uses (Settings › General › iPhone Storage shows it). Once your PDFs are saved, you can delete the backup in Finder or Apple Devices with Manage Backups.

Does it include deleted messages?

No. Only messages that were still on the iPhone when the backup was made are in it.

Will a court accept it?

Many people use these PDFs as a dated record: every message shows the sender, date and time, and the header says whose phone it is and which time zone the times are in. Keep the original backup as your master copy. Whether a court accepts it is up to the court; your lawyer can advise you.

How do I open the download on my computer?

The export is a .zip file in your Downloads folder. Windows: right-click it and choose Extract All. Mac: double-click it. A folder appears: your PDFs are in “Conversations”, the spreadsheets are next to it, and README.txt explains the rest.

How do I open the download on my phone?

The export is a .zip file. iPhone: Files › Downloads › tap the .zip, a folder appears, open “Conversations” and tap a PDF. Android: Files (or My Files) › Downloads › tap the .zip › Extract, then open “Conversations”. If it came in several parts, do this for each part.

What does it cost?

Preview and sample are free. The full export is $14.99 once, no subscription; one purchase works on 5 devices and covers iPhone and Android texts, Google Voice and WhatsApp. Try the free sample first: if the full export doesn’t work for your files, email us within 30 days for a full refund.
