iPhone backups are made on a computer, so the iPhone steps need a Mac or PC. The backup folder is large, but only the message, contact, call and photo files inside it are read.
Questions
Is it private?
Yes. The PDFs are created inside your browser; nothing is uploaded. From a backup, only the message, contact, call-log and photo files are read. Load the page, turn off Wi‑Fi, and it still works.
Does it include iMessage, SMS and group texts?
Yes: iMessage and SMS/MMS from an iPhone backup, SMS and MMS from an Android backup, and group conversations from both. Reactions (“Loved”, “Liked”) appear as short lines. Deleted messages are gone from the backup and can’t be recovered.
My iPhone backup is encrypted. Can it read that?
Not yet. In Finder or iTunes, untick “Encrypt local backup”, make a new backup, and add that folder. Unticking asks for the backup password; if you’ve forgotten it, on the iPhone go to Settings › General › Transfer or Reset › Reset › Reset All Settings (it keeps your data and apps), then back up again.
Where is my iPhone backup folder?
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup (in Finder, press Shift + Command + G and paste it). Windows: %APPDATA%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup, or %USERPROFILE%\Apple\MobileSync\Backup for iTunes from the Microsoft Store. Inside is a folder with a long name for each phone; that folder is the one to add.
Why are some photos shown as a note in the PDF?
iPhones save photos in HEIC format, which Chrome, Edge and Firefox can’t display. The photo then appears as a note in the PDF, and the original file is still copied into the Attachments folder. Safari on a Mac or iPhone shows HEIC photos inside the PDF.
Can I do this on the phone itself?
Android: yes, add the sms-….xml file right on the phone. iPhone: no, because iPhone backups are made on a computer; use a Mac or Windows computer for the iPhone steps.
Which time zone are the times in?
Phone backups store instants, not local times, so the page shows them in a time zone you choose (your device’s zone by default) and prints that zone in every PDF and in the spreadsheet.
Will a court accept it?
Many people use these PDFs as a dated record: every message shows the sender, date and time, and the header says whose phone it is and which time zone the times are in. Keep the original backup as your master copy. Whether a court accepts it is up to the court; your lawyer can advise you.
How do I open the download on my phone?
The export is a .zip file. iPhone: Files › Downloads › tap the .zip, a folder appears, tap a PDF. Android: Files › Downloads › tap the .zip › Extract. If it came in several parts, do this for each part.
